THE DESIGN

This vintage coffee table reflects elements of organic modernism and traditional design. The heavy, white and soft grey marble top is cut into a fluid biomorphic (or "amoeba") shape. Below is a sturdy wooden frame and three carved wood legs in a warm wood finish.

THE STORY

Dating back to the 1950s and 1960s, this piece is a textbook example of "Mid-Century Transitional" or Hollywood Regency design. During the mid-20th century, while strict minimalists favored the stark, straight lines of pure modernism, many designers and consumers craved a blend of the old and the new. This table captures that exact cultural moment: it marries the fluid, free-form "boomerang" shapes made popular by mid-century modern pioneers with the ornate, neoclassical detailing of French or Italian Provincial furniture. While this specific piece is unmarked, it strongly reflects the high-end catalog offerings of the Weiman Furniture Company or Gordon’s Inc., both of which were celebrated for bringing luxurious, marble-topped statement pieces into the fashionable mid-century American home.
