THE DESIGN
This handmade piece combines functional furniture and woodland sculpture. Constructed from unpeeled branches and twigs, it features a high, branching backrest that stretches upward, resembling a forest canopy. The seat is constructed from parallel rows of sturdy branches, while the base utilizes sturdy diagonal cross-bracing. Secured with traditional wire nails, the many natural materials at play in this statement piece offer a textured, earthy palette. Sold vintage as-is in very good condition.
THE STORY
Rooted deeply in the American Rustic Movement of the mid-19th to early-20th centuries, this style of furniture—often referred to as Adirondack or Appalachian Folk Art—was born out of a desire to bring the untamed wilderness indoors. Originally crafted for wealthy industrialists' summer "Great Camps" in upstate New York and rural hunting lodges, rustic twig furniture celebrated the natural, irregular forms of the forest. By utilizing native woods like hickory, willow, or mountain laurel, artisans created individualized pieces that mixed the natural environment with interior spaces. Today, pieces like this are highly sought after by collectors of American folk art and interior designers alike. Its organic, asymmetrical form makes it a brilliant focal point for biophilic design, wabi-sabi interiors, modern rustic cabins, or even eclectic woodland spaces.
